SAR signatures of oceanic internal waves in the Barents Sea

In this work a reanalysis of oceanic internal waves (IWs) manifestations in the Barents Sea on ALMAZ-1 SAR image in HH-polarization S-band is presented. Dependences between IW manifestations on SAR image and wind speed, wind direction, surface waves direction, thermocline depth were investigated. Obtained quantative IW characteristics in S-band were compared with those from Envisat ASAR in C-band. Then to estimate an impact of Bragg and non-Bragg scattering on IW SAR signatures formation a simulation in Radar Imaging Model (RIM) was made.
Finaly a conclusion is drawn that it is necessary and very important to take into account non-Bragg scattering especially in HH-polarization for IW determination.
