InSAR displacements associated to the November 2006 eruption of Nyamulagira

Abstract

Nyamulagira (Democratic Republic of Congo) is one of the two active volcanoes of the Virunga volcanic chain located on the western branch of the east African rift. Because of the region unstable political situation, this volcano is poorly studies. However, the SAMAAV (Study and Monitoring of Active African Volcanoes by InSAR techniques) project has permitted a regular InSAR monitoring of the volcano displacements that took place since 1997. Since then, Nyimulagira has erupted every other years, but only the November 2006 eruption gave a clear interferometric signal with up to 8 fringes toward the satellite close to the Nuamuragira crater. The measured displacements could be related to the eruptive fissure associated with the eruption and located to the south-east of Nuamulagira. This signal is analysed with the combination of a 3D boundary element modeling method and a neighborhood inversion algorithm.
