Recent Advances in Pol-InSAR Forest Parameter Estimation: Results, and Conclusions from actual Experimental Campaigns and Studies

Abstract

In the last years important national and international airborne campaigns have been performed with DLR's E-SAR System in order to investigate the potential and to assess the performance of forest parameter estimation by means of Polarimetric SAR Interferomety.

In the frame of these campaigns important forest ecosystems - including boreal, temperate and tropical forests - have been covered at different frequencies (X- L- and P-band) in a single- or repeat-pass single- or multi-baseline interferometric acquisition mode. The collected data (including the corresponding ground measurements) have been extensively used and analysed in the frame of different ESA R&D studies focused on the development and assessment of Pol-InSAR methodology.

In this paper we present the main (and actual) scientific results achieved, we review the potential and limitations of the different inversion scenarios (based on different frequencies, temporal and ) and product generation algorithms, we discuss the conclusions drawn, and finally as well as the recommendations towards operational and space-borne implementations of Pol-InSAR technology.
