International
Framework: |
Many international initiatives are directly or
indirecly adressing the coordination of the geohazards communities.
While the International Year of Planet Earth
(IYPE) seeks to raise the awareness of the contribution to, and role of
the Earth sciences in society in the minds of politicians,
decision-makers, the media and the general public, many other
international initiatives focus on the observations needs for specific
hazards:
- FDSN, the Federation of Digital
Seismological Networks,
- ICL, International Consortium on Landslides,
- WOVO, World Organisation of Volcano
Observatories,
- GGOS, Global Geodetic Observing System.
IGOS Geohazards stresses the needs of a
multi-hazards/multi-risk approach to better respond to the user
needs and to improve efficiency of Earth Observations. |
| Wed am |
Programmes &
Projects: |
Major programmes and projects contribute to
improving our understanding of Geohazards. They can consist in
deploying Earth Observation in-situ or space monitoring systems,
improving the access to these data through a better architecture or
assimilating and exploiting these data and translating them
into information for the end-users.
Project and programme managers will present
their scope and objectives during this session. |
| Wed pm |
Regional
CoP: |
The regional approach is often the most
appropriate to reduce the geological risk. As an example, landslides
triggering mechanisms can be better understood through cross-border
sharing of knowledge on the meteorological, seismic and geological
information.
Regional geohazards Communities of Practice are
ad-hoc groups concerned with these issues. They are invited to present the
geological risks they are facing, their coordination
efforts, and what are their plans to reduce
vulnerability to Geohazards.
Speakers from Africa and Middle
East, Latin America and Asia
will present. |
| Thu am |
Parallel Working
Groups: |
Three working groups sessions are organised in
parallel.
They will be based on presentations followed by
a discussion. The working groups will then
wrap up their conclusions during the afternoon sessions:
- Working Group 1 on Hazards Databases and Multi-hazard
Assessment.
- Working Group 2 on Science and
Observation.
- Working Group 3 on Regional and
International Cooperation.
|
| Th pm |
Round Table: |
High level
representatives of major organisations concerned with Geohazards will be
invited to critically review the strategy proposed by the workshop
participants and by the IGOS Geohazards to move toward a stronger
coordination for better Geohazards Observations. |

European Geohazards
Community of Practice |
This session focuses on
the need of coordination accross the Geohazards Communities of Practice in
Europe. Key organisations concerned by Geohazards in Europe are invited to
present their projects, their cooperation efforts with other countries and
their policies. The Eurogeosurveys Geohazards Working Group will be
invited to present the expected benefits of coordinated multi-hazards
mitigation policies in Europe and how this could be implemented. These
presentations will be followed by discussions with key European
organisations
Target participants: Eurogeosurveys Geohazards Working Group, European
Commission, European Space Agency, European scientists and authorities
representatives. Other participants to the workshop are welcome.
A parallel session dedicated to Architectural
issues is organised on Friday
Morning. |
