Prof Dr Irena Hajnsek


Irena Hajnsek has been leading the Polarimetric SAR Interferometry research group since 2002. Her main research interests are in electromagnetic propagation and scattering theory, radar polarimetry, SAR and Interferometric SAR data processing techniques, environmental parameter modelling and estimation.

She received her Dipl. degree (Honors) in 1996 from the Free University of Berlin, Germany and the Dr. degree (Honors) in 2001 from the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Germany. From 1996 to 1999 she was with the Microwaves and Radar Institute (DLR-HF) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. From 1999 to 2000 she has been 10 months with Institut d’Electronique et de Télécommunications de Rennes at the University of Rennes, France I and 4 months with Applied Electromagnetics (AEL) in St. Andrews, Scotland, in the frame of the EC-TMR Radar Polarimetry Network. In 2005 she was for 6 weeks guest scientists with the University of Adelaide, South Australia. Since the beginning of the TanDEM-X project she is coordinating the TanDEM-X science team.

Activities in education

She is giving since 2001 regularly lecture courses at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and has been invited to several other Universities to give some lecture courses in SAR Polarimetry and SAR Interferometry for different environmental applications. In addition she was organising a German summer school to the topic’s SAR Interferometry and ENVISAT, were she also held lectures and made exercises to the related topic’s. Since 2002 she is organising a one week lecture course in the frame of the Carl Cranz Gesellschaft in SAR Principles and Application. She participated in several summer schools as a lecturer organised by IEEE and Universities.
