firstname.lastname@example.org://www.uni-jena.de/en/start_en.htmlProf. Schmullius received her Ph.D in 1991 from the Institute of Space Sciences, Freie Universitat Berlin on “Radar Remote Sensing of Agricultural Areas with an Airborne L-, C- and X-band Scatterometer”.
She then worked in DLR Institute of High Frequency Technology, first as a research assistant (1991-1994), then as Team Lead (1994-1996) and finally as Group Leader “Geomatics” (1996-2000). She was also Project Scientist for the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM).
Since January 2000, she is Professor for Remote Sensing at the Geoinformatics Department, Institute of Geography, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. She is Administrative Lead of the Geography Examination Panel and Vice Director of the Institute of Geography.
Her areas of interest in research and education are primarily:
(1) Applied Remote Sensing: soil moisture mapping, phenological monitoring of agricultural crops, forest monitoring, biomass estimation, land cover classification and land surface parameter mapping for greenhouse gas accounting.
(2) Remote Sensing Science: interferometric processing (coherence analysis for land surface mapping; digital elevation model generation and surface deformation/change monitoring; new techniques in image processing.
Prof. Schmullius is involved in a number of EC and ESA projects, either as a coordinator or as a partner. In particular, since January 2002, she is Coordinator of the EC SIBERIA-II project and runs the ESA Land cover Project Office.
Activities in education
At FSU University Jena, Professor Schmullius gives Lectures and runs Seminars on Remote Sensing (principles and applications), Earth Observation instruments and missions and on Digital Image Processing.
Since 2000, she has supervised more than 30 research students to graduation (Diploma and Ph.D).
Christiane Schmullius was a lecturer for the Dragon advanced training course in land remote sensing 2005.
