Current velocities of the Gulfstream
Example of the use of ALT FDC data from TU-DELFT
Gulf Stream velocity fields are derived from near-realtime
radar altimeter data of the European Remote Sensing Satellite
ERS-2.
The altimetric heights are processed and disseminated by
ESA/ESRIN and enhanced by
NOAA Laboratory for
Satellite Altimetry with the appropriate geophysical corrections and
information on the satellite orbital altitude
computed by DEOS.
A full description description of the processing
and some of the results (status 1997) can be found in the
Florence paper by Lillibridge et al.
This page presents three maps of current velocities of the Gulf
Stream in the vicinity of the East coast of North-America.
Velocities are represented in meters per second. To get the approximate
velocity in knots you have to multiply by 2 (1.9438445 to be precise).
These maps are updated daily and can also
be retrieved by means of anonymous
FTP.
