Motivation Top of page

The GRID Information Revolution marks a new phase in the use of Information and Communication Technology for scientific research and industrial engineering.
The organisation and development of applications and research communities and, mainly, the approach to scientific activities are deeply changing: distributed "virtual" collaborations are emerging, as groups of geographically separated scientists and engineers can work and interact together on projects via an Internet link.
The basic idea behind the GRID technology is to harness computer resources through the Internet in order to exploit the full capacity of such distributed computing power to solve major computational and distribution problems, instead of using just one big and expensive computer.

The SpaceGRID Study has now uncovered the opportunities that GRID offers to the Space community for preparing the next generation Ground Segments, Science and Applications.

The SpaceGRID Study was launched in September 2001 by ESA (financed by the Agency's General Study Programme) to look into this exciting possibility.
Aim of this study is to analyse and assess how GRID technology can serve requirements across a large variety of space disciplines, in particular Earth Observation, Space Weather, Spacecraft-Plasma Interaction and Radiation Transport, Solar System Research, Spacecraft Engineering.
Moreover, as in each Agency's General Study Program funded studies, SpaceGRID has the overall objective to look at longer-term developments, which may impact, support or offer new opportunities to current and future ESA Programmes.
This study is run by a consortium led by Datamat S.p.A. (I), with Alcatel Space (F), CS Systemes d'Information (F), QinetiQ (UK), Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK), SciSys Ltd. (UK).

Objectives Top of page

The aim of this workshop is to present the results of SpaceGRID study and the work in progress in a number of GRID related activities, to analyse future opportunities, to show the potential benefits of the GRID technology into space research and applications.

On 21 May available prototypes will be demonstrated and other new application scenarios will be discussed with researchers, users and the space industry.

On 22 May 2003, additional opportunities offered by the GRID technology in industrial applications will be introduced and discussed in the framework of the European Commission FP6 Programme actions.
