Dr Hervé Yésou received his Ph.D in 1993 in “merging of remote sensing data for geological applications” from the University of Strasbourg Member of SERTIT remote sensing team.
He is a remote sensing specialist in charge of the hazards and environmental applications. He participated to the major EO programs through pilot projects on the exploitation of SAR and optical data: ERS1-2, SPOT 4 MIR and SPOT 5 SIR C/X-SAR for ADRO Radarsat Program, ENVISAT.
He was coordinator of an ENVISAT project on wetland monitoring in France and Poland as well as the ESA Water and Fire project on the exploitation of SAR time series and VHR optical data.
Since 2000 he is external expert for CNES on the definition of VHR future sensors, participating to the ORFEO thematic group on Risks and Humanitarian. He is also since 2003 the European leader of the Flood DRAGON project. He is a key member of the SERTIT rapid mapping service, being involved in the Space and Major Disaster Charter action, triggered after major natural disasters such as Gard 2002, Haiti 2004, Romania 2005, Central Europe 2006 (floods), Katrina 2005, Algers 2003, Pakistan 2005 (earthquakes), Tsunami 2004.

Activities in education

Hervé has taught advanced courses on Image Processing since the end of the 1990s within the framework of cooperation projects in West Africa, in particular the project on “Improvement of Flood Management by Space Techniques, Education and training”.
He also contributed to the “Space Techniques for Environmental Risks” Advanced Study Course .
Since 1990, he has supervised more than 15 research students to graduation (MSc) in optical and radar remote sensing applications.
In 2003, he also provided long periods of lecture and training in China on the exploitation of Earth Observation data for disaster rapid mapping in the framework of the Sino French Catachina project.
He also regularly participated to seminars on the topics of natural hazards organized at master level, or for a wider public.

Distinctions / Memberships

Expert on water and remote sensing Programmes for international projects (Canada, Luxembourg, EU).
Active member of the ESA Category-1 Advisory Group.
Reviewer for scientific journals: International and Remote Sensing (since 1995), Computer and Electonics in Agriculture, Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences, IEEE trans Rem. Sensing, Revue Télédétection.
Member of the redaction committee of Bulletin Société Française de Photogrammétrie et de Télédétection .
