Background

Prof. José Pereira has an undergraduate degree in forestry from DEF/ISA, and received an MLA (1986) in Landscape Planning and a Ph.D. (1989) in Natural Resources Management, both from the University of Arizona.

He was Assistant Professor at DEF/ISA in Lisbon from 1990 to 1996, Associate Professor from 1996 to 2006, having obtained his Habilitation in 2005. In 2006 he became Full Professor at DEF/ISA. Between 2001 and 2004 he was on leave of absence, as Principal Investigator at the Tropical Research Institute, also in Lisbon.
He was a visiting scientist at the Department of Soil and Water Science (U. Arizona) in 1992, and at the Joint Research Centre Space Applications Institute in 1996. He was also short-term visiting scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre (1997) and at EUMETSAT (2001 and 2002).

Prof. Pereira has been active in various international committees, such as the International Scientific Committee of the EUFIRELAB Project (since 2006), Scientific Coordinator of the National Plan for Forest Protection against Wildfires (2004-2005) and member of the National Council for Rehabilitation of Fire-Affected Areas (2004-2006), member of the Forest Focus Scientific Advisory Group, DG-Environment, European Commission (2003-2005), Co-chair of the IGBP-DIS Fire Working Group (1996-1999). member of the SPOT4-VEGETATION International Users Committee, member of the ESA-ATSR Fire Algorithms Working Group, member of the EUMETSAT/JRC Working Group on Meteosat 2nd Generation Terrestrial Biosphere Applications, and member of the Miombo Network Fire Working Group.

J. Pereira’s research focuses on large-scale fire ecology, and relies heavily on remote sensing and geographical information systems, as tools for data acquisition and analysis. His research team has used Landsat satellite imagery to map fire perimeters country-wide and annually, since 1975 to the present. Those data were the basis for the development of a national fire risk map, adopted by the Portuguese Forest Service. They are also being used to calculate fire frequency parameters, to support field-based estimation of post-fire fuel accumulation curves, and to analyze fire “preferences” for different land cover types. He has also been involved in research dealing with the relationship between fire and weather, including the identification of synoptic patterns associated with very severe fire days and seasons, and with the projection of future meteorological fire risk under a 2xCO2 climate.

Another focus of his research is the application of remote sensing to the assessment of global biomass burning. He was involved in field campaigns in both hemispheres of Africa, in South America, and in Australia, and participated in the first global analysis of fire activity performed over a period of one year, and in the development of the first multi-annual continental-scale estimate of pyrogenic emissions of trace gases and aerosols for Africa. He also collaborated in the development of the first global monthly burned area product at 1-km spatial resolution, created in the year 2000 under the scope of the UN Millennium Ecosystem Assessment.

Activities in education

In 1994, José Pereira created the Laboratory for Remote Sensing and Geographical Analysis, which he has led since.
His teaching responsibilities have encompassed courses in Fire Ecology and Management, Forest Ecology, Remote Sensing, Geographical Information Systems, and Management of Protected Areas.
His student supervision duties have led to 7 Ph.D. degrees (awarded, 1 of which as co-supervisor) and 8 Ph.D. programs in progress (3 of which as co-supervisor); 11 M.Sc. degrees (2 of which as co-supervisor); and 42 graduation projects.

Distinctions / Memberships

J. Pereira has received educational and personal improvement grants from the Fulbright Program, the Luso-American Foundation, NATO, and the World Bank Portuguese Forestry Program.
