Background

Mário Caetano has a degree in Forest Engineering from the Lisboa University of Technology (1989), a MSc in Geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1995), and a Ph.D. in Forestry (2000) from the Lisboa University of Technology.
He is the Head of the Remote Sensing Unit of the Portuguese Geographic Institute, since its creation in 2000.

Research interests include the use of remote sensing data for land cover land use (LCLU) characterisation and environmental monitoring. He is particularly interested on satellite image classification algorithms, spatial and temporal pattern analysis and on accuracy assessment strategies.

He has coordinated and participated in many research and development projects funded by National Science Foundation (FCT), European Commission (EC) and European Space Agency (ESA), such as:

  • LANDEO (User driven land cover characterisation for multi-scale monitoring using multi-sensor earth observation) (PCDTE/MGS/49969/2003);
  • AGRO130 (Using satellite images for automatic mapping of forest clear cuts and new plantations);
  • APERTURE (environmentAl tyPological spacE mappeR facilitating the implemenTation of eURopean legislation) (ENV4-CT94-0437);
  • AMECIS (Multi-strategic approach for satellite image processing) (DGOT);
  • DREU (Assessment of the dynamics of the Área Metropolitana de Lisboa using remote sensing) (RS/12/031/MF/SW);
  • PREMFIRE (Prevention and Mitigation of Fire Hazard in Portugal) (AO/1-3880/01/l-SB);
  • STORMS (Silvicultural Srategies For Predicting Damage To Forest From Wind, Fire and Snow) (CT94-2392);
  • BACCHUS (Methodological Approach for vineyard inventory and management) (EVG1-CT-2002-00075).

He was also the coordinator of land cover mapping projects using satellite imagery, e.g. CORINE Land Cover 2000 (CLC2000) for the European Environment Agency (EEA), Monitoring Urban Dynamics (MURBANDY) for Porto, Setúbal and Algarve for the European Commission. Currently he is the coordinator of CLC2006 for Portugal and of the national project 2005 Land Cover Map of Portugal (COS’2005).

Mário Caetano evaluated proposals for: National Science Foundation; Sixth Framework Programme of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration activities; and STEREO (Support to the exploitation and research of Earth Observation) from the Belgian Federal Office for Scientific, Technical and Cultural Affairs. He also evaluated projects of the Fourth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development of the European Commission (1999).

He was the Chairman and organiser of the Seventh International Symposium on Spatial Accuracy Assessment in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (Accuracy’2006). He organised several workshops in Portugal related to satellite earth observation, e.g. Remote Sensing for forest characterisation (2006), Information Day On Earth Observation (2003), GMES and ENVISAT (2001). He was the President of the Scientific Committee of the most important Portuguese conference on GIS (ESIG’2004). He was Co-chair of the Conference on Remote Sensing of the Land Surface (SPIE Symposium on Aerospace Remote Sensing 2000) and of the Conference on Remote Sensing for Earth Science Applications, (SPIE Symposium on Aerospace Remote Sensing, 1999).
Mário Caetano was a member of the Scientific Committees of many conferences, e.g. II International Conference and Exhibition on Geographic Information (GISPLANET’2005), 2nd EARSeL SIG Workshop on Land Use & Land Cover (2006), 25th International Symposium of EARSel (European Association of of Remote Sensing Laboratories) (2005); National Conference of GIS users (ESIG’2006).

Mário Caetano is the President of the Scientific Council of the Portuguese Geographic Institute.

Activities in education
