Contribution to Wetland Monitoring of Multi-mission Satellite Radar Altimetry

There have been many attempts to derive inland water heights and associated information over wetlands using satellite radar altimetry. In general, these studies have been limited to permanent water bodies of appreciable size within individual wetlands.

This paper presents the results of a study of representative wetlands with global distribution, to assess the extent to which satellite radar altimetry can make a substantive contribution to wetland monitoring. Key to the results presented in this paper is the analysis of echo shapes, to identify those waveforms returned from a water target, and appropriate retracking of these echoes to obtain estimates of water heights. The results show that satellite radar altimetry can make a substantive contribution to the monitoring of wetlands, both in direct measurement of the height and spatial extent of areas of open water, and in monitoring the height variations of inflowing and outflowing rivers.
