From
Berlin to Dresden (Germany) - Elbe river - 30 July This
ERS-1 ascending track acquired on 30/7/97 shows an area
some 10 km West of the border between Poland and Germany
(Oder river). The fast transmission from Fucino acquiring
station (Italy), gave us the chance to check these data
just a few hours after the satellite acquisition.
In the left image, the bright area at the top of is the
city of Berlin. The Elbe river runs from SE to NW in the
lower part of the image.
Some areas close to the town of Cottbus, about 80 Km NE
of Dresden, seem to be flooded.
The right image is an ERS-1 and ERS-2 multitemporal
image and shows an area around the town of Cottbus (the
bright area at the central right edge).
The comparison with this multitemporal image shows that
not all the dark areas in the single ERS-1 frame are
really flooded. Only the blue coloured sites in the
multitemporal image were flooded on 30/7/1997, while the
areas in black or dark blue tones are normally covered by
water.

From Glogow
to Krosno (Poland) - Oder river - 18 July
These ERS-2 multitemporal images show the flooding
along the Oder river in Poland on the 18 July. The river
flows from East to West touching, in order, the towns of
Glogow, Nowa Sol and Krosno. This first image shows the
town of Glogow (bottom right corner) on the south side of
the river and, Nowa Sol (near the center): around both
cities large flooded areas (in blue) are evident. The
town of Kozuchow is also visible near the left bottom
corner of the image. At the upper right corner the town
of Slawa near the lake (in light blue) is also visible. |

Krosno and Guben (Poland) - Oder river Following
the river, this image shows the town of Krosno at the
confluence of the Oder with the Bobr river. Some part of
the town appear flooded (in blue or dark blue), and a
very large area is present at its Eastern part.
The frontier town of Guben (Gubin), on the German -
Polish state boundary is visible at the bottom left part
of the image. The river Neisse that flows through the
town appears in normal condition.

Confluence
between the Oder and the Warta river
This ERS-2 multitemporal image shows the flooding
along the northern part of the Oder river on the 21 July.
The area shown in this image is the border between Poland
and Germany, from Frankfurt (cluster of bright dots at
the bottom right of the image) to about 50 km northward,
where the river takes a South-North direction. This area
is located about 80 km East of Berlin
What appears in blue is the area covered by the
floodwaters. The huge flooded area at the confluence with
the Warta river was completely dry on the archived image
(used as a reference), but it could be a marshy area
occasionally covered by water. |

From
Poznan (Poland) to Czech rep. boundary - Notec, Warta and
Oder river - 3 August The left image, an ERS-2
ascending pass acquired on 3/8/97, covers an area from
the northern part of the Czech Republic to central
Western Poland. The border between the two states
corresponds to the morphological slope variation visible
at the bottom of the image.
In the right image (a detail of the upper part of the
track), some dark areas probably indicate flooding along
the Notec rive. South, the town of Pila and West, the
small town of Wielen, were probably flooded during the
satellite acquisition.
A Landsat 5 TM pass (31 July) was checked but was
completely clouded over.

This image (enlargement of

some areas (in dark) probably flooded along the Oder
river, from the town of Legnica (SE) to the town of
Zielena Gora (NW), just below the central part of the
image. In the Landsat 5 TM acquisition of the 15th July
this area is partially visible through the clouds.

This multitemporal image shows an
enlargement of the left part of the above picture and
shows the flooding that hit this area. The areas that
appear in blue are flooded respect the
reference image of the 25 May. It is interesting to
compare this image with the multitemporal
one of the 18 August (named "Glogow", above) to
see the evolution of the phenomenon. |

From
Szczecin (Poland) to Dresden (Germany) - Notec, Warta and
Oder river - 5 & 6 August This descending
track (left image and the one below) were acquired,
respectively, by ERS-1 on 5 August and by ERS-2 on the 6
August, covering from the coast of the Baltic Sea (North
of Stettin), to the small Polish town of Muskau Przewoz
(just visible at the lower central edge of the image),
showing the Notec, the Warta and the Oder river.
Three large flooded areas, shown by dark tones, are
distributed about the central part of the image along the
Oder river: the first is 26 km NE of the town of
Frankfurt, at the confluence with the Notec river
(central left part of the image); the second is 10 km SE
the same town; the third near the right edge of the
image.
Other flooded areas are spread across the lower part of
the image.

This multitemporal image covers a large
section of the River Oder around the town of Frankfurt,
from Krosno (bottom right) to its confluence with the
Warta. The magenta areas along the river are those
flooded on the 5th August, while those in green-cyan
where flooded only on the 6th August; the blue tones show
areas flooded on both dates.
The differences in the colours between this image and
that of the 21st July are mainly due to the different
techniques used: in this image scenes acquired on the 5th
and the 6th of Augustwere compared with a reference scene
acquired in May, and so the final picture
containselements of all three scenes, giving a balanced
multitemporal image that shows only the significant
changes between the three scenes. The image of the 21st
July compared just onescene that showed the flooding with
a reference scene.
In order to compose an RGB image from just two scenes the
first principal component of the two scenes was also
used; this technique enhances the variance between the
two scenes, creating more colour variance in the final
multitemporal image. |

The right image and the one above were obtained by
superimposing the two ERS passes (so with one day
interval).Some small changes are visible:
what appears in blue was flooded on 5/8/97
what appears in yellow was flooded on 6/8/97
what appears in black or dark blue tones was flooded on
both those dates or is normally covered by water (this
will be confirmed only after a comparison with an older
archive image).
