Gulf of Oristano, Sardinia
Orbit 34860 Frame 2799 20 December 2001 7:48 GMT
Mountainous Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean, is imaged here.
To the right: the Gennargentu (1,834 m) with its great forests and a wild rugged morphology.
On the central-west coast of the island, the Sinis peninsula delimits the Gulf of Oristano to the north.
Here, in Tharros, the remains from the eighth century BC's permanent colonies established by the Phoenicians can be found.
Facing the Gulf: Oristano town. It lies on the northern Campidano plain, between the left bank of the lower Tirso River and the S. Giusta Lake, natural habitat of pink flamingos.
