Norwegian Fjords
Orbit 36370 (ascending) Frame 1208 April 4, 2002 21:29 GMT
Southwestern Norway and its fjords are imaged here in a night overpass of ERS-2.
Upper right image quarter: the city and seaport of Bergen (original name is Bjorgvin), situated
along inlets of the North Sea, in a picturesque valley surrounded by seven mountains.
It is the second largest city in the country and is a cultural, fishing, industrial and shipping centre.
The left part of this image shows several interesting ocean features. Circled are the long
gravity waves induced by coastal winds. Elsewhere, because of low wind conditions on the
coast, ocean currents form a lot of fronts (dark lines) generating several vortices.
At the image bottom: an oil slick.
