ERS-2 in Action!
Gyroless operations of ERS-2, made possible by
ESA and European industry, enable the satellite's multi-year
activity to continue, thus securing an uninterrupted,
good-quality SAR product data flow for utilisation in most application domains.
The ERS' showcase focuses today on:
Japan*: Northern part of Honshu Island
Orbit 33180, Frame 2781, 25 August 2001, 01:23 GMT
Centre-right: the town of Aomori on the Mutsu Bay.
Southwest of Aomori: the town of Hirosaki.
To the left,
Mount Iwaki, one of the many volcanoes in the country.
Upper left: the extreme southern limit of Hokkaido Island
separated from Honshu Island by the Tsugaru Straits,
across which, along the famous Seikan Tunnel, the longest
rail in the world runs (it is a single rail 53 km long,
out of which 23 km are undersea at various depths reaching up to 140 m).
* The CEOS 15th Plenary Meeting shall be held in Kyoto on November 6-7, 2001
