More than 1,000 islands line the coast of Croatia and Dalmatia.
Top left: Brac (formerly Brazza), part of Croatia, is the largest one and lies just out to sea from the city of Split. A channel 19 km wide separates it from the Dalmatian coast.
Below, Hvar (formerly Lesina), is the longest Adriatic island. The oldest (prehistoric) relief of a ship in Europe was found here. Due to its mild winter climate (2724 hours of sunshine per year!) and rich subtropical vegetation, Hvar has also been called the ''Croatian Madeira''.
Centre: Korcula (formerly Curzola), where farming and fishing are the principal industries.
Bottom left: Otok Susak
Bottom centre: Lastovo
