The image shows the extreme southwestern tip of the Korean peninsula.
A multitude of islands is visible.
The largest in the lower right section is named Chin-do. The main city
in the area is Mokp'o, the leading port in the region (circle),
where a bridge crossing to the nearby peninsula can also be seen.
This subtropical area is famous for its beauty and has now been protected
through the establishment of several national parks.
The radar image reveals low wind
conditions during data acquisition. This has roughened the sea surface
locally, increasing the radar response of the sea at
the level of the land. In fact the coastline
is not visible in some places making the orientation with
respect to a map difficult. The landscape includes hills,
large estuaries and alluvial plains, threatened by strong tides.
The homogeneous bright areas are rice- and cotton-growing land,
mostly very small fields.
