Part of Hampshire was imaged by the SAR instrument at night time.
This County is renowned for the beauty of the New Forest, in the south-west (upper right image quadrant), an about 200 square kilometres area consisting of approximately 47% wooded areas, 58% open heath and 2% cultivated land, formerly a royal hunting ground and now possessing national park status.
Oak, beech and holly predominate (see the image light gray tones, whilst open heath appears in dark gray).
Top right: Southampton, the biggest trading and container port on the south coast of England, also handling passenger traffic to the Isle of Wight (lower right image quarter). Ships in navigation can be detected throughout.
On Southampton Water, an inlet of the sea: the large oil refinery of Fawley
Isle of Wight: to the North, Newport. To the south: the interesting sea bottom topography revealed by the SAR.
