Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
SAR Orbit number: 52137
10 April 2005
Description:
This multitemporal colour composite SAR image centres
over Sarajevo, the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Sarajevo lies in the exact geometric center of the triangular-shaped
Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Sarajevo valley, a small depression 500 meters
above sea level. The city covers 142 km˛(88.2 mi˛) of land, expanding on a
relatively flat terrain. However, some of the outskirts and far eastern parts of
Sarajevo are hilly and the old town in particular is renowned for its steep
streets and landscape.
The river Miljacka flows through the city from
east to west and is one of the city's chief geographic features. The river is a
tributary of the Bosna river; its source is in the town of Pale, some kilometers
to the east of Sarajevo.
The city is surrounded by five major mountains:
Bjelasnica (2067 meters) and Igman (1502 meters) to the southwest; Jahorina
(1913 meters) and Trebevic (1627 meters) to the southeast; Treskavica (2088
meters) to the north.
Bjelasnica can be spotted as the pale beige area
at the very centre of the image, to the south west of Sarajevo. This mountain is
made up of calcarenites and dolimites, which give the mountain its
characteristic colour.
The small lake on the South West, near the left edge of the image, is in fact part of a much larger lake, the Jablanicko Jezero Lake, trending E-W and extending for 40km, from the city of Konjic to the village of Orlac.
To create this image, a different colour was
assigned to three ERS-2 SAR images, each acquired on a different date.
