OverviewIn 1989 following several recommendations from the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research and from the Antarctic Treaty, the National Program for Antarctic Research (PNRA) decided to implement a system for the storage, retrieval and distribution of data and results from the Italian expeditions in Antarctica. The Italian System for Antarctic Data Exchange is a joint-project between the ENEA and the CNR, under the appointemet of the PNRA of the Italian Ministry for Scientific Research and Technology. The first goal of the project was to monitor all the work conducted so far research and to store the news on available data in a multidisciplinary directory, called the "South-Pole Directory". This was the first interdisciplinary antarctic directory to be accessible on-line on the international network. The second goal, still in progress, was to set up Field Centers in Italy, each hosting a data-archive related to a well defined antarctic discipline of research.
