Abstract

The objective of this research is to evaluate the potential of multitemporal RADARSAT-2 polarimetric data for urban land-cover mapping. In most of the SAR Polarimetry studies, the urban area is extracted as a whole object because of its complex scattering combination, though it consists of several land-cover types. In this paper, the different polarimetric behaviors of the different urban land-cover types will be studied in detail. Three dates of RADARSAT-2 quad-pol SAR data were acquired over Toronto, Canada during the summer of 2008. The major land-cover types are high-density builtup areas, low-density builtup areas, roads, parks, golf courses, forest, water and several classes of agricultural crops.

This research will use a hierarchical classification method based on the SAR polarimetric features for urban land cover mapping. The classification logic is to firstly classify the image into several most several most distinct classes first, and then some of the classes will be classified into more detailed classes. The polarimetric signatures, polarimetric textures and the phase information of the different urban-rural land cover types will be extracted from the multi-temporal images and analyzed systematically. Various polarimetric features will be used at different classification levels based on their characteristics.

The preliminary result reveals that entropy of the HV SAR image is a good descriptor for forest and the road. More polarimetric features such as polarimetric signature, polarimetric texture and the phase information will be investigated. Various polarimetric features will be used at different classification levels based on their characteristics.
