A Method for Detection and Transparency Classification of Clouds over Water

Abstract

The MERIS standard algorithm for detection of thin clouds and ice haze need to be improved significantly for ocean colour applications. We propose a method similar to the Novelty Detection (DOI 10.1007/s10661-006-9538-5) but analysing 12 bands between 412nm and 864nm of top of standard atmosphere (TOSA) reflectances including the smile-corrected oxygen absorption band. Reflectance spectra representing all spectral shapes were selected and classified by experts into different cloud classes. A learning procedure was used to produce the 'spectrum to cloud-transparency' relationship emulating the experts classification.
