Atmospheric correction in presence of sun glint: application to MERIS

Abstract

The coverage of the current MERIS ocean colour products is limited by the sun glint which cancel almost half of the observations at sub-tropical latitudes. In the current MERIS atmospheric correction scheme, the sun glint signal up to a value of 0.005 is predicted from the wind speed and corrected for with a reasonable accuracy. Above the glitter threshold value of 0.005 it is estimated that the glitter cannot be predicted accurately and the product is flagged out for glitter. We have developed an original atmospheric correction algorithm, named POLYMER, designed to recover ocean products in the whole sun glint pattern. The accuracy of the retrieved parameters remains good. This algorithm also shows less sensitivity to the presence of semi-transparent clouds. The resulting increase of the useful coverage of MERIS data for ocean colour is dramatic.
