Validation of the aerosol product over land

Aerosol product over land is partially validated since the Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) at 443 nm has been successfully compared to AERONET measurements only when the remaining cloud contamination is filtered out by empirical means. Moreover the spectral dependence of the AOT is not validated at all. The improvement of the cloud mask is a general issue for the MERIS product and it still needs a particular effort. Concerning the aerosol retrieval itself, it is necessary to better characterize the ground reflectance of the LARS (Land Aerosol Remote Sensing) target. The current source of data for building the LARS reflectance LUT's (Look Up Tables) is MODIS. These LUT's have been updated using MERIS data through the outputs of the ALBEDOMAP ESA's project. Comparison of current MERIS data, reprocessed data with updated LUT's and coincident AERONET data (AOT and Angtröm coefficient) are shown to quantify the potential improvements of the quality of the aerosol product over land.
