Atmospheric correction of MERIS images of inland waters using a MODTRAN LUT approach

Abstract

Atmospheric correction of MERIS images of inland lakes is difficult due to a number of reasons: topographic altitude and viewing geometry needs to be accounted for; the adjacency effect may have to be removed and realistic settings for atmospheric optical properties have to be chosen. Atmospheric heterogeneity may pose problems as well. Earlier experience with MODTRAN using the "toolkit" approach by De Haan and Dekker has shown that MODTRAN is suitable to tackle a number of these problems. We now intend to take this methodology a step further by incorporating AERONET measurements. Based on "toolkit" formulations we are now able to build multi-dimensional look-up tables based on MODTRAN that can be used to rapidly correct satellite (MERIS) images for the above mentioned effects.
