Improvements to physically based water constituent monitoring in Lake Constance with MERIS

A physically based algorithm is used for automatic processing of MERIS level 1B full resolution data of Lake Constance. The modular structure of the algorithm allows for comparison of different types of (1) atmospheric correction (i.e. assumption based or iteratively coupled) and (2) noise reduction methods (i.e. spatial filtering or regularisation). The effect of instrument smile and adjacency effect correction algorithms is investigated. Empirical recalibration is performed by maximizing the agreement of processing results for 21 MERIS images with coinciding operational chl-a sampling measurements in the years 2003-2005. 11 recalibrated input images from 2006 are used for validation with the same reference data. Radiometric in situ measurements are used as additional reference, allowing for the parameterization of lake specific SIOP.
