First multi sensors InSAR monitoring of an eruptive crisis: the April 2007 eruption at Piton de la Fournaise from ASAR and ALOS-PALSAR data.

From 2 April to 1 May 2007, Piton de la Fournaise experienced one of its major eruptive crises since it started a new cycle of activity in March 1998. On 7 of April, while large lava flows were advancing toward the sea on the southeast flank of the Grand Brulé, the activity culminated with the ~300 m collapse of the entire Dolomieu crater at summit of the volcano. The displacements of the ground associated with this eruption were detected on interferograms produced from ASAR and ALOS-PALSAR data. This is the first time that two complementary sets of InSAR data, with different wavelength, are used to monitor such an event. They allow a more detailed analysis of the displacements chronology and illustrate the benefits of a multi sensors approach for the InSAR monitoring of volcanic activity. The PALSAR level 1.0 data are shared among the PIXEL Consortium, and provided from JAXA under a cooperative research contract with ERI, Univ, Tokyo The ownership of PALSAR data belongs to METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) and JAXA. The ASAR data are provided to us by the European Space Agency through the ENVISAT AO-746 project.
