Surface Deformations in Southern-Italy Areas of Campania Region by ERS-SAR Observations

The yearly rate of ground surface deformations are estimated by using ERS1/ERS2 SAR interferograms for Southern-Italy areas of Campania region and, in particular, for Appennini Mountains around Benevento city. For this purpose, two different methods are employed: (1) the multi-pass differential interferometric process and (2) the InSAR-ICA technique developed at MARSec. The similarities and differences between the two approaches are enhanced and compared with previous landslides maps produced for some test areas by the ESA's SLAM (Service for Landslides Monitoring) project. Results are interpreted in terms of reliability of SAR techniques for surface deformation monitoring and, above all, in terms of probability of correctness of observational results. This work represents one of the conclusive reports of the ESA Category-1 Project C1P-3193.
