Evaluating the effect of the observation time on the distribution of SAR Permanent Scatterers

Abstract

A first assessment of the effect of the observation time on the distribution and density of SAR Permanent Scatterers will be presented. A first PS analysis has been carried out using 26 ERS-1 SAR (Track: 22, Frame: 2763, Mode: descending) images acquired over Roma and Frascati (Italy) in the 4 months time span (end of December 1993 mid April 1994) during operation phase D (3 days revisiting time). The results will be compared with the output of a 35 days revisiting time PS analysis, covering the 5 years time span 1995-1999. This second data set will be formed selecting 26 ERS-1/2 out of the available 55 (Track: 79, Frame: 2763, Mode: descending), to get very similar acquisition parameters (especially the normal baseline distribution) for the two data set. The difference of PS distribution and location will be analyzed with the help of high resolution optical imagery aiming at identifying targets behaving as PS only in short temporal intervals. The conclusions of this analysis: - will contribute to the knowledge of the physical nature of SAR Permanent Scatterers. - should also provide useful hints to plan future SAR mission dedicated to InSAR applications, in particular the monitoring of individual buildings.
