Abstract

Year 2004 GlobAer products for the mid-visible aerosol optical depth (AOD) and Angstrom parameter are evaluated against quality data from ground-based remote sensing with sun-photometry. The performances of the individual retrievals for AATSR, MERIS and SEVIRI as well as for the merged retrieval are scored with respect to rank-based bias and (both spatial and temporal) correlations – globally as well on a sub-regional basis. In further assessments these scores are compared to those of popular aerosol satellite data-sets, including MODIS, MISR, AVHRR and PARASOL. As the scoring method retains sub-scores at smaller spatial (e.g. sub-region) and temporal (e.g. monthly) basis more detail on particular retrieval strength and weaknesses is provided.
