A central objective for future altimeter missions will be to provide data required by operational oceanography integrated systems (i.e. that use in-situ and satellite observations together with models and data assimilation to provide an integrated description of the ocean). We will review the development of global operational oceanography and the unique contribution of satellite altimetry. Requirements for future altimeter systems (e.g. continuity, accuracy, resolution, data availability) will then be analyzed and main issues will be discussed.
