Combined use of ALOS AVNIR-2, PALSAR and SPOT 5 data for mapping and monitoring of wetland vegetation in two different ecosystem types

Abstract

The ALOS satellite offers the possibility of combining optical, SAR and surface height data from the same platform. The main objectives of the study to evaluate the suitability of ALOS to investigate the possibilities and constraints of the single and combined use of ALOS AVNIR-2 and PALSAR and SPOT5 data for mapping and monitoring of wetland vegetation in two different ecosystem types. In the Eider-Treene-Sorge lowlands in northern Germany the main focus is on the monitoring of Natura 2000 habitats (Bock et al. 2005). In the southern Aral Sea region in Uzbekistan the monitoring of Asian migratory locust habitats is of high importance (Navratil 2007). In both areas wetland mappings based on other EO data and sufficient field data are existing. In the technical domain feasibility of optimized segmentation procedures developed by ESCH et al. 2008, Atmospheric Correction with ATCOR (Richter 2007) and classification algorithms will be tested. As work is still ongoing, first results will be presented at the ALOS Symposium.
