Natural oil films near the Utsira Island (Norway)
The
very long dark slick in the image has aligned itself with the current shear,
and is therefore believed to be of natural origin. A natural film has a lower
viscosity than oil originating from a man made spill, and therefore it may reconfigure
more easily when subjected to currents. Hence, such slicks may give good indications
of the circulation patterns in the imaged region.
The island Utsira may be seen due east of the slick. The wind speed on 26 June
1993 was 7-8 m/s from the south-east.
See the interpreted
image to better identify the features.
