Gravity waves in Coast of Iceland
This
example shows three distinct wave groups which were propagating towards the
southwest, in the nominal direction of the surface wind velocity. The wavegroups
each have distinct wavelength scales: 3.8 km for the group near the north-west
corner of the image, 3.1 km for the group near the north-east corner of the
image, and 2.7 km for the group near the eastern side of the image.
In this case, the generation mechanism is unknown. Note that all three wavelength
scales could be supported by the same atmospheric conditions.
