West Coast of Svalbard
This
ERS-1 SAR image obtained on the southwestern coast of Svalbard (21 January 1992)
(see the location of the SAR image
) shows a band of compact firstyear ice along the west coast in the lower part
of the image. This ice originates east of Svalbard and is transported along the
coast with the ocean currents. Further north new-frozen ice, especially grease
ice, is identified as dark patches off the coast. Also the fjords are covered
with ice which is usually formed locally. Isfjorden, in the upper part of the
image has some scattered ice and patches of open water. The ice conditions in
Isfjorden are important for the ship traffic to and from Longyearbyen, the main
port of Svalbard.
