Pack-ice off the Greenland Coast in November
Later
in autumn and further north on the Greenland coast the packice is more developed.
On 11 November 1993 a 40 - 50 km wide zone of mostly new and young ice types,
10 - 30 cm thick, is observed by the ERS-1 SAR at about 63ºN (see map
).
The open water signature (C) is slightly brighter than the ice signature (A).
In the case of low wind speed (2 - 4 m/s) open water and ice can give similar
backscatter levels, and discrimination of ice from water can be difficult. In
the lower part of the image a large tongue of ice (D) is extending more than 100
km out from the coast.
