North Coast of Svalbard

The area north of Svalbard (see the location of the SAR image ) can be ice free even in winter due to the Westspitzbergen Current which transports warm water to the area. The ERS-1 SAR image of 19 March 1992 shows multiyear ice in the upper part of the image, which is present throughout the year.

Further south an area of scattered ice (ice concentration of 50%) is found, where open water is identified by the bright areas in the image. The bright signature of open water suggests that the wind speed is more than 6-8 m/s. The ice edge was found just to the left of the image in this period. Some fjords and a glacier on northern Svalbard is seen in the lower part of the image.
