First year and multiyear ice
 This
ERS-1 SAR image, gathered on 7-7-1992, describes the first year ice fraction
on the continental shelf (southern part) as well as multiyear ice fraction over
the continental slope (northern part); (see the location of the SAR
image )
In the northern part the backscatter values are about -9 dB. On the other hand
the backscatter values of the firstyear ice fraction in the southern part of
the figure are only about -13.5 dB.
