Fram Strait winter ice
This
ERS-1 SAR image was obtained on 8 January 1992 in the Fram Strait (see map)
and shows characteristic winter conditions with refrozen leads (A), multiyear
ice in the interior of the ice pack (B), small multiyear ice floes broken up by
wave action (C), firstyear ice, grease and pancake ice (D), and open water (E)
outside the ice edge.
Time series of such images, taken at 3-6 days interval, are useful to calculate
ice motion in the Fram Strait, which is important for estimation of the ice export
from the Arctic Ocean to the Greenland Sea.
The grease and pancake ice show the eddy circulation which is characteristic for
the ice edge region in the Fram Strait.
